Hardwood Flooring FAQs

Straightforward answers about solid and engineered hardwood, pets, moisture, concrete, acclimation, ordering, cleaning, and refinishing.

Hardwood is a long-term material choice, and the best floor depends on more than color. These answers cover the practical questions that come up most often as homeowners compare products and plan an installation.

What's the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?

Solid hardwood is made from one piece of wood. Engineered hardwood has a real wood surface over a layered core, which helps reduce movement as humidity changes. Both offer the natural beauty of real wood.

Which hardwood floor is best for my home?

The right choice depends on your lifestyle, subfloor, room conditions, budget, and preferred look. A showroom comparison can help narrow the options that fit your space.

Is hardwood flooring suitable for homes with pets and children?

Yes. A durable finish, regular cleaning, trimmed pet nails, and protective pads under furniture help keep floors looking their best. Textured surfaces and varied grain patterns can also make everyday wear less noticeable.

Is hardwood flooring waterproof?

Most hardwood flooring is not waterproof. Wipe up spills promptly and check the specific product's warranty before choosing it for areas exposed to moisture.

Can hardwood flooring be installed over concrete?

Many engineered hardwood products can be installed over concrete with the proper preparation and installation method. Moisture testing and the manufacturer's requirements should guide the installation.

Does hardwood flooring need to acclimate before installation?

Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Your installer should check the flooring's moisture content, subfloor, temperature, and humidity to determine when it is ready to install.

How much flooring should I order?

A common starting point is your measured square footage plus 5-10% for cuts and waste. Angled layouts, patterned installations, and complex rooms may require more.

Will my floor look exactly like the sample?

Wood naturally varies in color, grain, and knots. Samples show a portion of that variation; viewing several boards helps give you a better sense of the overall appearance.

How do I clean hardwood floors?

Sweep or vacuum regularly using a hard-floor setting, and use a cleaner approved for your floor's finish. Avoid steam mops, standing water, and abrasive cleaners.

Can hardwood floors be refinished?

Many solid hardwood floors can be sanded and refinished multiple times. Engineered flooring depends on the thickness of its wood wear layer and its construction. A flooring professional can evaluate your floor.

What's the difference between refinishing and recoating?

Refinishing sands the floor down to bare wood before applying a new finish. Recoating prepares the existing finish and adds a fresh protective coat without sanding down to bare wood. A recoat works best before wear reaches the wood.

How long will hardwood flooring last?

With proper installation and care, hardwood flooring can last for decades. Its lifespan depends on the product, traffic, moisture conditions, and ongoing maintenance.
